Yokotani Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Kanazawa Institute of Technology adopts Netropy Traffic Generator, a Traffic Generation Solution from Apposite Technologies Provided by Rikei

Rikei Corporation (headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Satoru Isaka; hereinafter “Rikei”) is pleased to announce that Kanazawa Institute of Technology adopts Netropy Traffic Generator, a traffic(*1) generation solution from Apposite Technologies Inc. (headquarters: California, USA; CEO: Joseph Zeto; hereinafter “Apposite”) that is provided by Rikei.

*1 Traffic: Amount of information sent and received on a network

Product overview

Netropy Traffic Generator is a solution that generates the flow of traffic from thousands of levels of applications to evaluate network environments and the performance of network devices. It reproduces communications between application servers and servers, enabling the evaluation of the system’s communication capabilities.

For example, it generates realistic application traffic on a large scale to evaluate the performance of a network or device, such as the evaluation of capabilities of a firewall against generated traffic and simulation of processing of a large volume of traffic during VPN connection.

Features

  • Browser-based GUI(*2) featuring an intuitive wizard (FAQ)
  • Provides a large library of predefined application flows
  • Supports urban-scale traffic up to one million emulated(*3) clients
  • Can amplify one traffic capture to several thousands of flows
  • Provides a unified interface for all test applications
  • Logs and reports for offline analysis to identify performance issues

*2 GUI: Graphical User Interface
*3 Emulate: To imitate

Background behind the Introduction

Yokotani Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Kanazawa Institute of Technology has been using the Netropy N61 network WAN emulator for research purposes related to next-generation communication networks and performance analysis.

In order to further accelerate research on BACnet application, we have adopted the “Netopy Traffic Generator” to simulate the traffic source of BACnet/IP (*4), the building monitoring and control network protocol, which is our current research theme.

A feature of BACnet is that it can connect all building equipment, such as lighting and air-conditioning systems, via the BACnet protocol even if each piece of equipment has manufacturer’s own specifications. Therefore, it is used widely as a communication standard for the integrated monitoring and control of a variety of infrastructure equipment in a building.

Used in large-scale building systems, medium- to small-sized commercial facilities, hotels, and airport systems, and other systems, BACnet is a current building control protocol industry standard.

*4 BACnet (Building Automation and Control Network):
Standardization standards for communication protocols that serve as standards for monitoring and controlling equipment such as lighting, air conditioning, security for crime prevention, and power meters in a building by centrally managing the equipment through a network.

Future development

Rikei will propose the Netropy Traffic Generator for purposes such as network development, including applications involving specific communication protocols at universities and companies.
