Launches “Learning Mode,” of VR Firefighting Educational Training Simulation System, Jointly Developed by Rikei, Yokohama City Fire Bureau, The University of Tokyo, and Tokyo University of Science. Enabling Safe Simulation of Fire-Site Dangerous Situation.

Rikei (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Satoru Isaka; hereinafter “Rikei”) is pleased to announce that the development of “Learning Mode” of VR Firefighting Educational Training Simulation System specialized in firefighters’ educational training is now completed, which had been jointly developed through industry-academia-government collaboration for safe simulation of dangerous situation at fire site and starts sales from November 2023. The “Learning Mode” is to be used for educational training for new firefighters at Yokohama City Fire Bureau.

Overview of VR Firefighting Educational Training Simulation System

VR firefighting Educational Training Simulation System, which is specialized for firefighter educational training, is being jointly developed by Rikei, Yokohama City Fire Bureau, The University of Tokyo, and Tokyo University of Science in an industry-academia-government collaboration. The system consists of the “Learning Mode” to learn about fire characteristics (how fire start and spread) and the “Training Mode” to experience firefighting in the virtual space.

About the “Learning Mode” of VR Firefighting Educational Training Simulation System

“Learning Mode” consists of the following three contents.

  1. “360° VR of the combustion experiment”
“Learning Mode” adopted 360°VR reflecting a fire experiment that burned the interior of a building.
  2. “Image with visualized fire temperature “
Users can confirm fire temperature changes visually during fire progression by adding numerical measurement data taken from 120 points at the fire experiment to VR image that captures the evolution of fire phenomena over time accurately.
  3. “6DoF (※1) Smoke Experience”
Users can move freely around the building fire scene on VR to see the expansion of smoke.

The contents allow users to learn about fire characteristics with an immersive experience as if they were watching a fire progress in a room burning at temperatures of 500°C or higher.

※1 6DoF:6 Degrees of Freedom. The six mechanical degrees of freedom of movement of a rigid body in three-dimensional space. Specifically, the body is free to change position as six types of movement: forward/backward, left/right, and up/down movement; up/down, left/right, and forward/backward rotation.

Future Plans

We will promote sales of “Learning Mode,” VR Firefighting Educational Training Simulation System to firefighting and disaster prevention organizations nationwide, contributing to learning about the progress of fire. In addition, we will donate a part of the sales amount of the system to City of Yokohama.
In addition, we will continue to pursue further joint R&D to complete the “Training Mode” that can simulates dangerous firefighting activities with immersive experience.
