Two New Features for DNS and Cyber Attacks Added to "Netropy Traffic Generation" from Apposite, Rikei's Sales Product

Rikei Corporation (Headquarters : Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Satoru Isaka; hereinafter “Rikei”) is pleased to announce that two new features, namely DNS (*1) server stress testing and protocol (*2) generation for cyber-attack prevention have been added to “Netropy Traffic Generation” from Apposite Technologies LLC (Headquarters : California, USA; CEO: Joseph Zeto; hereinafter “Apposite”,) a product that generates various traffics (data) from one million terminals at most on network to replicate production environment for testing.

*1 DNS : Domain Name System. A mechanism for managing domain names on the Internet.
*2 Protocol : Rules and regulations for computers to telecommunicate with each other over a network.

Overview of the new features

The new features are “DNS Storm,” which specializes in DNS stress testing, and “Attack Library,” which allows users to take countermeasures in advance by replicating cyber-attacked situation.

“DNS Storm” is used for preliminary testing by companies with large amount of DNS accesses, such as internet service providers and membership sites, and generates DNS-specific protocols to verify how much stressed when queries (connection request) are sent from one million terminals.
GUI (Graphical User Interface) is used for operation, allowing test items to be set intuitively and easily.

The “Attack Library” enables testing for cyber-attack countermeasures by transmitting approximately 10,000 types of cyber-attack protocols over the network. Files infected with malware are sent to see if firewall can block them, and if not, confirm where the factors are and make improvements.

Features of “DNS Storm”

  • Verifying the load response of the DNS server by generating and sending two million DNS queries per second from one million terminals.
  • Using DNS Storm’s web crawler to generate a list of the 500,000 most popular domains automatically at the moment, allowing testing without manual entry of domains.
  • Reporting on sent queries, lost queries, averages, packet size, min/max latency(*3), etc.

*3 Latency : Time from when a transfer request is sent until the data is returned. Delayed time of communication

Features of “Attack Library”

  • Constantly upgrade the latest vulnerabilities, threats and attack methods thereby update more than 10,000 libraries of viruses, malware, zero-day attacks, DoS, spyware, vulnerabilities, etc.
  • Protect your network and devices from evolving cybersecurity threats with monthly program updates.

Background of the market

In recent years, due to the increase in online meetings and working from home because of the COVID-19 pandemic online processing has increased and the access processing of service providers has also increased rapidly. As a result, it has become more important to improve and evaluate the DNS servers that process a huge number of requests.
In addition, there is an urgent need to respond to the ever-increasing number of different types of cyber-attacks. By hitting firewalls and servers with malicious attack patterns, Traffic Generation can be used as equipment verification and cyber-attack exercises (cyber range).

Future plan

Rikei is going to sell Netropy Traffic Generation to service providers, carriers, operating companies of membership sites, system integrators, data centers, and other private companies that need to confirm various communication routes on the network.
